University of Michigan Health Systems M-Fit Health Promotion Division developed the “Great Expectations with Folic Acid” campaign to encourage women of childbearing age to choose foods and supplements that can help them get the recommended daily level of folic acid to help prevent birth defects in their future children. Two-thirds of such women do not get the recommended 400 micrograms a day. Shelf signs, in-store tastings and other strategies have been designed to help draw customers’ attention to foods that are high in the B vitamin called folic acid. The campaign was funded by a March of Dimes community grant.
M-Fit’s programs are believed to be unique in the nation, because they provide targeted nutrition information about different foods in the supermarket – giving women information about food and folic acid when they’re making their food choices. More about M-Fit. |
