Folic Acid Council
|
The Folic Acid Council was established in 1999 to increase the number of Michigan women who are aware of folic acid and take a vitamin supplement to reach the recommended 400 micrograms of folic acid each day. Dr. Karin Muraszko, of the University of Michigan Medical Center, chairs the Council, which includes a representative from each of the following: the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist, the American Dietetic Association, the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, the Detroit Medical Society, the Florida Department of Citrus, the Michigan Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, the Michigan Council for Maternal and Child Health, the National Coalition of Hispanic Health and Human Services and the Spina Bifida Association of Southeast Michigan. With the financial and in-kind support of the March of Dimes, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) will take over the leadership of the Folic Acid Council in 2003.
The Michigan Chapter’s Folic Acid Council has been responsible for the following activities to help inform people about the importance of taking folic acid:
- Creation of a video containing folic acid messages directed toward women participating in the W.I.C. program. The video is available at over 70 W.I.C. offices throughout Michigan.
- Development of a set of audience-specific educational introductory videos specifically designed for Arabic, Hispanic, teen and general audiences. The videos are available free of charge for health education about folic acid
- Preparation of slides and overheads about folic acid, which are available free of charge for educational presentations.
