2008 NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW CHARITY PREVIEW
18-Jan-08
Charities like the March of Dimes rely on preview:
2008 NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW WELCOMES 15,000 GUESTS
RAISES $6 MILLION FOR CHILDREN'S CHARITIES

(Southfield, MI, JAN. 18, 2008)— Touted as the nation's largest one-night fundraiser The 39th Annual Auto Show Charity Preview was held on Friday, January 18th, to kick off the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The event welcomed a sell-out crowd of 15,000 guests and $6 million was raised for children’s charities, including the March of Dimes. The Charity Preview is one of the most exclusive, high profile events in the nation. Celebrities, athletes, and politicians are drawn to this black-tie gala.
"It was a fantastic evening for children and a grand night for Detroit," said Tom Riopelle, March of Dimes State Director."  “The babies in our community need our help. By being a part of the Charity Preview, we can help save babies and give hope to families.  We can help give all babies the gift of a healthy start."
This gala fund-raiser gives patrons a sneak peek of the 2008 North American International Auto Show.  Tickets were $400 per person ($390 of each ticket is tax deductible). The charities share the proceeds of the event, but the pot is not split evenly. When patrons buy a ticket, they designate which charity benefits from their money.
Since its inception in 1976, the event has raised $77 million for children’s charities in metro Detroit, over $60 million of that in the last 10 years alone. The purchase of a single Charity Preview ticket buys goods, clothing, and health and support services for many local kids.
Once commanding wait lists upwards of 3,000 people, Detroit's social event of the year has fallen victim to the economy and the benefiting charities are feeling the pinch.  “The March of Dimes raised $463,000 from the 2008 Auto Show Charity Preview,” said Riopelle.  “People still believe in the Charity Preview and what it means for Metro-Detroit and for the children.”
The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.  With chapters nationwide and its signature event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies.  For the latest resources and information, visit marchofdimes.com or nacersano.org.
