The March of Dimes is working with the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and North Point Health and Wellness Center to create Minnesota’s first Stork’s Nest.
Stork’s Nest is a program designed to increase the number of pregnant women who begin prenatal care in the first trimester and continue regular prenatal visits until their babies are born. Stork’s Nest is designed for low-income women of all backgrounds.
Women who attend doctor’s appointments and educational classes earn points towards incentive items like maternity and infant clothing, baby supplies and larger items like high chairs and strollers. Young teens, low-income women, and African American women are at a particularly high risk for getting late or no prenatal care.
Prenatal care is vital for identifying medical and risk factors that affect a developing fetus. Stork’s Nest provides incentives for women to get the care they need. Stork’s Nest is currently accepting donations of onesises/sleepers, baby wash, diapers/wipes, wash clothes/towels, bottles/formula, cribs, maternity clothes, car seats and high chairs.
Although Stork’s Nest is new to the Minneapolis area, the program is part of a national collaboration between the March of Dimes and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Starting in 1971, there are currently more than 100 active Stork’s Nest programs in the United States.
Our Stork’s Nest is located within North Point Health and & Wellness Center on Penn Avenue in North Minneapolis. Participating pregnant women must be referred by the center. For more information contact March of Dimes Minnesota Chapter at (952) 835-3033.
