Preterm And Low Birthweight Births Are On The Rise In Missouri

The incidence of prematurity in Missouri has increased over the past ten years from just over 8,400 births in 1990 to more than 9,000 births in 2000. Prematurity is one of the leading causes of infant death and disability.
Equally alarming, is the fact that African American babies are more than 2 1/2 times more likely to die before their first birthday than white babies are in our state. |
