Healthy Babies Healthy Business
Statistics and support for HBHB
* One-half of all births in the U.S. are to women in the workforce.
* Each year approximately five percent of women of childbearing age working in any given organization will have a baby.
* By presenting the prematurity case, you demonstrate the impact of adverse pregnancy outcomes on a business.
* Each year, approximately 3,000 pregnancies are affected by neural tube defects (NTDs) and approximately 2,200 infants are born with NTDs.
* The economic impact of NTDs is substantial. The average lifetime cost for a child born with spina bifida is estimated to be $636,000 (in year 2002 dollars).  Costs associated with NTDs are shared by parents, employers, and communities.
* Preeclampsia (pregnancy-related high blood pressure) affects 5% to 7%
of all pregnancies.
* In 2003, approximately 204,868 pregnant women were admitted to the hospital   for hypertension, staying on average 3.5 days. The average per-person charge for such hospital admissions totaled $11,208.   To learn more about this program contact one of our local March of Dimes offices today!
