Central New Jersey Maternal Child Health Consortium – 65,000 – 3years The Central New Jersey Maternal Child Health Consortium is applying for funds to implement a prenatal education program targeting Hispanic and African American women in the City of Perth Amboy, Year 1 and in Carteret, Plainfield, South Plainfield, Franklin Township, and Somerset County in Years 2 & 3 using Comenzando bien and Body and Soul. The purpose of the grant is to improve preterm birth rates.
Hudson Perinatal Consortium - $75,000 Hudson Perinatal Consortium proposes to replicate the Each One, Teach One program in Hudson County. The initiative will train 10 advocates on perinatal health issues, prematurity prevention and ways to reduce infant mortality. Once trained, the advocates will serve as ambassadors within their faith based communities.
Newark Community Health Centers - $30,000 Newark Community Health Centers is applying for funding for Centering Pregnancy, a best practice model of group prenatal care. The pilot will begin at the Ludlow site with 2 groups. An intensive evaluation will be administered to all patients in the groups.
Paterson Health Center - $22,112 To reduce stress, enhance patient education and to decrease the high rate of preterm birth, Paterson Community Health Center will initiate the Body and Soul program. Educating women to the signs and symptoms of preterm labor and providing nutritional and antepartum education will empower women to improve pregnancy outcomes.
Previously Approved Our Lady of Lourdes - $74,732 This is the third year of Osborn Family Health Center’s Bilingual Preconception and Prenatal Education Program. The program is supported by incentives for compliance with prenatal preparation and childbirth education classes, early prenatal classes and preconception care education. The program serves 2480 Hispanic women in Camden.
UMDNJ - $52,000 The UH/OB/GYN Preterm/ Prenatal Health Project’s goal is to enhance educational and support services for pregnant women, focusing on reducing disparities in preterm birth. A large component of the program is health literacy. The program will serve 800 black and Hispanic women receiving care at University Hospital in Newark.
Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative - $29,700 Will provide information to staff in six obstetrical outpatient settings re: the impact of impact of prematurity, provide offices with patient education materials as well as a method of uniformly screening all patients for signs and symptoms of preterm labor. Will serve 3000 primarily African American women.
Zeta Phi Beta – Zeta Delta Zeta Chapter -$10,000 The Storks Nest and a newly formed Mother to Mother component will assist high risk low income pregnant women in Burlington County. In addition to the educational sessions, the Mother to Mother component will provide support and guidance to registered moms in an effort to reduce infant mortality. The project will serve 50 black women.
