The March of Dimes New Jersey Chapter and our partner organizations are helping moms have healthier pregnancies and babies begin healthier lives. Below are some programs where our grants and awards are making a difference.
We are providing funds to improve the health outcomes and well being of premature infants by increasing optimum nutrition through breast milk feedings. Each of the sites below will focus on best practices of education and support for increasing the number of mothers who pump and express breast milk and provide exclusive breastfeeding during and after the infant’s stay in the NICU. Each of the programs will be evaluated by Dr. Bai. Our Lady of Lourdes (Camden), Capital Health (Mercer), Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (Middlesex), Dr. Yeonkyung Bai
Cooper Hospital will be piloting this new program from Dr. David Olds, creator of the Nurse Family Partnership. The program provides group prenatal care with education and support to address reduced health and social functioning of high risk and socially disadvantaged women. Cooper University Hospital Institute for Urban Health (Camden)
Identification and management of medical and behavioral risk factors during the interconceptional period are essential to improving the outcomes of subsequent preterm births. Lead by Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, each site will develop an interconceptional health education module to educate mothers of high risk infants and engage these mothers in risk screening, tracking and follow-up to reduce their potential risks. Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative (Atlantic, Camden & Gloucester), Children’s Home Society (Mercer), Osborne Family Health Center (Camden), Central Jersey Family Health Consortium (Middlesex), Hudson Perinatal Consortium (Hudson & Essex)
We will support the implementation of group prenatal care at each of the clinics below. CenteringPregnancy encompasses assessment, education and support for patients in a group setting. The model has demonstrated a reduction in preterm births in participants. UMDNJ/ OB (Newark), CentraState Family Health Center (Monmouth), JFK Family Medical Center (Middlesex), UMDNJ-SOM (Gloucester)
The project will provide pregnant women with T1, T2, or gestational diabetes, or at risk for diabetes mellitus with specialized education, counseling, and support services. Approximately 75% of the participants will be low income. CentraState (Monmouth)
This will provide linguistically and culturally appropriate prenatal and postnatal health education and support to at risk, pregnant women, birth fathers, and their families. We will focus on enhancing prenatal care and support services that focus on reducing disparities in preterm birth. Children’s Home Society (Ocean), Family Intervention Services (Essex)
This project has the goal of decreasing the singleton preterm birth rate in African American women in Newark by 15 percent. We will support patient navigators at each of the sites below to increase access to care and compliance with care. Newark Beth Israel (Newark), University Hospital (Newark)
