March of Dimes Earns Place on Working Mother’s 100 Best Companies List

September 17, 2013

March of Dimes efforts to help families balance work and family have been recognized again by the Working Mother 100 Best Companies list.

“Our goal is healthy pregnancies and healthy babies, and our benefits and policies are designed to give our employees the best chance to achieve that,” said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of March of Dimes. “We are honored to be recognized for the fourth time for our achievements supporting families. Throughout the years, March of Dimes has recommended – and offered – policies and benefits that help working families obtain a better and healthier life balance, and we will continue to do so for years to come.”

“Now in its 28th year, the Working Mother 100 Best Companies are leaders in building initiatives that truly support all employees. They are the vanguard of successful companies, with modern policies for American families,” said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media.

In honor of the 100 Best Companies, Working Mother has declared October 15th as the first annual National Flex Day to encourage support for workplace flexibility.

The March of Dimes offers its employees access to flex-time, part-time and compressed work weeks, the opportunity to work from home or telecommute, among other benefits, as part of its family-focused policies and efforts to help employees achieve a balanced work and family life.

The March of Dimes offers monthly conference calls on work life benefits and policies, as well as quarterly calls covering retirement planning issues. It offers four weeks paid time off to new parents for surrogacy, adoption and foster care placement of a child. Women who give birth receive a minimum of six weeks time off at full pay, (eight weeks for C-Section) upon the birth of their baby. Also, new fathers or significant others receive four weeks paid time off upon the birth of a child.

Other family-focused benefits include:

  • 100% Medical Coverage for all maternity and childbirth expenses; no-cost well-child care through the age of 18; no-cost annual physicals for adults
  • Salary Continuation Plan for short-term disability
  • Sick Pay of 10 days per year, which can be used for child/dependent illness
  • Mothers at Work Program free prenatal kits; breast pumps, and lactation services
  • Immediate Medical Coverage on the first day of employment for expectant moms or the significant others of expectant moms
  • Extended Parental Leave of Absence, up to six months of unpaid leave for a birth, adoption or foster care placement. Expectant moms may request two weeks of this leave prior to the delivery date, even if it isn’t medically indicated.

In 2013, the March of Dimes is celebrating its 75th anniversary and its ongoing work to help all babies get a healthy start in life. About 4 million babies are born in the United States each year, and the March of Dimes has helped each and every one through research, education, vaccines, and breakthroughs.
