From the Chair...
Greetings, Team Youth!

I hope this edition of the Team Youth Times finds you well rested and looking forward to another great year for babies! Through YouthTimes, we will update you, our youth volunteers and advisors, on the latest events within the March of Dimes. Whether you are reading this in the south or north, east or west, one thing is for sure, spring WalkAmericas are only a few months away! But before you grab your water bottles and lace up your shoes to participate in the March of Dimes largest annual fund-raiser, remember to contact your local March of Dimes office and form a team, participate in fund-raisers, and spread the word!!

One great way to raise money for WalkAmerica is through the use of your local Coinstar machines! Coinstar operates over 10,000 machines all over the nation - one of them is probably located in a grocery store near you. Just check out www.coinstar.com to find the machine nearest to you where you can donate your loose change directly to the March of Dimes by entering our code, 1-2-3-0. Not only will you be getting a head start on your WalkAmerica fund-raising efforts, you also will be saving babies!!

Good luck in your studies and thank you for your dedication to the babies - we are lucky to have you on our team. Go, Team Youth!

Feature Story

Start Healthy, End Healthy

By Thu Le Phan
Executive Chair,
Orange County, CA

From September through December 2004, the Orange County March of Dimes Youth Leadership Council worked on new and creative projects to spread awareness of the increasing number of babies born prematurely each day and to reach its goal of raising $10,000 for the March of Dimes.

To kick off the new term, the Council participated in the "Start Healthy, End Healthy" tour with Gerber and Wal-Mart, a health fair that offers wellness and nutrition information for expectant mothers and parents with young children. Council members distributed bags with information packets to the store patrons and, with our assistance, Gerber was able to give away more than 750 bags in three hours!

For National Youth Month, the Council collaborated with Key Club, the National Honor Society, and others to hold a very successful Prematurity Campaign project, inspired by the National Youth Month Planning Guide. While the focus of the project was to raising funds by selling hospital bracelets for $1.00/each, the project educated students and adults about the mission of the March of Dimes by having posters placed throughout the school campus.

The Council raised additional funds by wrapping books at Barnes and Noble and asking customers to make a donation to the March of Dimes. Through two 6-hour shifts, we raised more than $200!

In total, the Council raised $1,462.83! But we haven't stopped there - we are now planning a community service project and additional fund-raisers that will take place during January and February. Then, in March, the Council will begin to focus on WalkAmerica!

Team Youth Clubs and Organizations are on the move...

FBLA is marchin' their way to Orlando! The Future Business Leaders of America March to Orlando campaign is the latest national fund-raiser for the March of Dimes, in which clubs will sell "feet" to raise money.

Each state and region are challenged to sell enough paper "feet" to make it to the Sunshine State for the summer 2005 national conference in Orlando! The state in each region and the region that raises the most money will be recognized on stage at the FBLA National Leadership Conference.

KEY CLUB UPDATE

Key Club members are soon to be engaged in the Mile of Dimes campaign, as they hope to reach a Mile of Dimes, or $9,216, in each district across the nation. Looking back into March of Dimes history, they are taking this fund-raising idea from the popular campaign of the same name that began in 1939.

And how are they going to tackle this lengthy accomplishment? To raise enough dimes to stretch a mile long, clubs will engage in such projects as "dime war" competitions among classrooms and coin collections in cafeterias, cash registers and coffeehouses!

Are you a Key Clubber who wants to find out more? E-mail fgomez@marchofdimes.com

Key Club, a national partner of the March of Dimes, is the oldest and largest service program for high school students, and exists on nearly 5,000 campuses, mostly in the U.S. and Canada.
