PERSONAL SPOTLIGHT: GIANT IN THE NICU

Dear March of Dimes,

After what started out to be an easy, uneventful pregnancy, I woke up one morning in my 7th month to find I was bleeding. My husband and I rushed to the hospital and my son, Jack Ryan, was born 19 hours later. He was born at 33 weeks, and at 5 lbs. looked like a giant next to most of the babies in the NICU! He was put on a ventilator and given surfactant. After he was able to breath on his own (5 days after he was born) he was sent to phase II of the NICU, where he needed to learn to suck, swallow and breathe at the same time, and regulate his body temperature.

We were so blessed to be able to bring Jack home after only 2 weeks in the NICU. But, even though he's over a year old now, the images of all the tiny babies struggling to survive never leaves me. For this reason, I volunteered to help with WalkAmerica, and actually accepted a job with my local chapter as a WalkAmerica Coordintor this fall.

I keep two pictures of Jack on my desk: One from the day he was born, with tubes and tape and wires all over his tiny body, and a new picutre of my healthy, happy 18-month-old boy. They are constant reminders of why we do what we do.

  WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Accutane and Other Retinoids

Accutane is a prescription medication used to treat severe nodular (cystic) acne (a disfiguring form of acne that causes multiple inflamed cysts and scarring) that has not responded to other treatments. Accutane is a member of a family of drugs called retinoids, which are related to vitamin A. When taken during pregnancy, Accutane and other retinoids can cause very serious birth defects.
