FDA Considers Drug to Prevent Pre-Term Birth

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is considering a drug to help reduce the number of premature babies. 

If approved, Gestiva would be the only drug available to help mothers carry their babies to term.  The drug, a naturally occuriing female hormone called progesterone, would be used in women with a history of preterm delivery.  Premature babies face a host of neurological, behavioral and other problems, including brain damage.
