ABOUT ONLINE MODULES

The March of Dimes has four online continuing education modules. Each module costs $30.

1.

Understanding the Behavior of Term Infants (2003)
Infant temperament; sleep and awake states; factors influencing infant state; sleep cycles; safe sleep environment; infant behavior, reflexes and cues; feeding the term infant; parent education. 2.5 contact hours for RNs.

2.

Preterm Labor: Prevention and Nursing Management, 3rd edition (2004)
Rates; risk factors and risk assessment; ethnic/racial disparities; pathophysiology; diagnostic criteria; history of prevention programs and strategies; nursing management of women hospitalized with preterm labor, women being treated for preterm labor in the home and women facing inevitable preterm delivery. 5.1 contact hours for RNs.

3.

Antepartum Assessment & Laboratory Evaluation, Part 1: The First Visit (2006)
Goals of prenatal care; the health history; maternal; paternal and reproductive history; cultural assessment; maternal age; lifestyle factors; current pregnancy status; initial physical examination; initial laboratory evaluation; blood tests; Pap smear; screening for vaginal and cervical infections; screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea; tuberculosis skin testing, PPD; unrinalysis; urine culture and sensistivity; urine drug screen. 4.1 contact hours for RNs.

Antepartum Assessment & Laboratory Evaluation, Part 2: Ongoing Care (2007)
Provides information about assessing the health of both the mother and fetus during ongoing prenatal visits. Discusses weight gain, dietary requirements, signs of preterm labor, ongoing laboratory evaluation, fetal surveillance, and fetal diagnostic tests. Includes a comprehensive table on the discomforts of pregnancy. 3.6 contact hours for RNs.


A nurse can complete a module by studying the online materials, completing the test, and printing a continuing education certificate right from the browser. The preterm labor module is also available in print. The March of Dimes is currently developing other online and print modules.
