If you walked in WalkAmerica, you probably signed the Prematurity Awareness Banner, making you one of the 18,700+ people who did!  The March of Dimes Ohio chapter had a statewide goal of collecting at least 18,600 signatures – one for every baby born premature in a single year in Ohio.  By positioning banners at all 21 walksites around the state, every walker, family member and volunteer had a chance to show their support for the fight to reduce premature birth, and improve the health of all babies.  With the signature goal met, the banners will now be displayed for Ohio Legislators at an event at the Ohio Statehouse.

The needs of mothers and babies need to be carefully considered by our elected officials as they formulate policies that govern -- and draft budgets that fund -- programs that help pregnant women.  One important example is the Ohio Medicaid program.  Each year in Ohio, about 40 percent of all births have their care paid for by Medicaid.  Even still, there are many pregnant women in the state who lack insurance, yet earn just enough to not qualify for assistance.  To help these women, the March of Dimes and others worked successfully during the recent state budget process to expand Medicaid eligibility for pregnant women.  Legislators do listen to their constituents, and the signed banners will help show that the average Ohioan cares about the health of babies, and expects thoughtful public policy.  Thank you for helping us show them just how many people in Ohio really do care.
