After five long years of volunteer and staff advocacy, Pennsylvania March of Dimes secured passed of Newborn Screening legislation that insures that all babies born in Pennsylvania receive a simple heel stick in the first days of life to determine if they are at risk for disability or death due to undetected metabolic conditions. Implementation of this legislation began on July 1, 2009, with our State Department of Health tracking an additional 22 newborn conditions and referring parents to treatment facilities for care and follow-up. Thanks to hundreds of families across Pennsylvania for making the passage of this legislation a priority. Special thanks to State Senator Jane Clare Orie and State Representative George Kenney who championed this legislation in both houses and worked with the Governor to successfully pass this legislation critical to the health of our babies.
