Philadelphia, PA, August 20, 2012
The March of Dimes recently announced that Joe Biondo of Milford, Pennsylvania will serve as the National Family Teams Co-Chair for the 2013 March for Babies, the nation’s premier walking event held in 778 communities across the country with more than 7 million people participating annually. Mr. Biondo will be joined in this volunteer effort by Sue Brendel of Washington.
Mr. Biondo is Chief Investment Advisor of Biondo Investment Advisors. His family has been actively involved with the March of Dimes since the loss of their son, Lorenzo, at 24 weeks due to preterm birth. In 2010, Joe and his wife Sari, worked with the Northeast Pennsylvania division to start the Delaware River March for Babies event. Under the family’s leadership, over $150,000 has been raised in just three years.
Each year, thousands of families support the mission of the March of Dimes by forming Family Teams and participating in March for Babies. These teams are made up of family members, friends and co-workers walking together to celebrate, honor or remember the babies who touch their lives.
“I’m honored to be asked to serve in this role,” says Mr. Biondo. “Our family’s experience in volunteering with the March of Dimes has demonstrated that sharing our personal story of loss and hope can make a difference in raising awareness and funds. Sadly, our story is like that of so many other parents, and we know it is important for us to come together so that one day all parents might know the joy of a healthy baby.”
March for Babies takes place the last weekend in April in hundreds of communities nationwide and raises important funds to support cutting-edge research, community-based programs and help bring comfort and information to families of babies in newborn intensive care.
Preterm birth is a serious health problem that costs the nation $26 billion annually, according to a 2006 Institute of Medicine report. Following three decades of increases, in 2010 the United States saw the first four-year decline in the preterm birth rate, to just under 12 percent. Despite the improvement, nearly half a million babies are born too soon each year and babies who survive an early birth face the increased risk of life long health challenges such as such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and others.
