• During 2005-2007 (average), the very preterm birth rate in Atlanta was highest for black (3.9%) and white (1.2%) infants. 
• Black infants (3.9%) were about 4 times as likely as Asian infants (0.9%) to be born very preterm during 2005-2007 (average). 
• Very premature babies who survive may suffer lifelong consequences, including cerebral palsy, blindness and other chronic conditions.
