• Maternal age is a risk factor for very low birthweight, with higher rates found among the youngest and oldest mothers. 
• In Detroit during 2008-2010 (average), very low birthweight rates were highest for women ages 40 and older (4.5%) and ages 30-39 (3.8%) , compared to 3.1% for all live births. 

Healthy people 2020

  • Very low birthweight: reduce to no more than 1.4% of live births.
