• Maternal age is a risk factor for very low birthweight, with higher rates found among the youngest and oldest mothers. 
• In Kansas City during 2008-2010 (average), very low birthweight rates were highest for women under age 20 (2.5%) and ages 20-29 (1.5%) , compared to 1.6% for all live births.
