• Currently all states in the United States screen for S-Beta thalassemia. 
• In the United States, screening for the 31 core newborn screening conditions is not universally required by rule or law and fully implemented in any state.

  • Hb S/A = Hb S/Beta-Thalassemia
  • In this form of sickle cell anemia, the child inherits one sickle cell gene and one gene for beta thalassemia, another inherited anemia. Symptoms are often milder than for Hb SS, though severity varies among affected children. Routine treatment with penicillin may not be recommended for all affected children.
