Questions & Answers

Will folic acid help me get pregnant?

Probably not. There is no evidence that folic acid plays any role in fertility. This vitamin promotes health in adults, but it does not have a direct effect on a woman's ability to conceive.

Folic acid may help to prevent birth defects of the brain and spinal cord in the early development of the fetus. Most women should take 400 micrograms of folic acid per day before pregnancy. Pregnant women should get at least 600 micrograms of folic acid, which can be found in most prenatal vitamins.
