Protecting yourself and your growing baby

Your growing baby depends on you to keep him healthy! That means you’ve got to stay safe and keep away from things that can hurt you or your baby during pregnancy.

Lots of people think of their pets as family. Animals can bring much fun and joy to your home. But during your pregnancy, be careful about the kinds of pets you keep in your home. Be sure to handle them safely and keep away from animals that can make you sick.

Make sure your environment is safe and avoid dangerous substances like chemicals and radiation. Be sure you’re taking extra steps to stay safe, like always wearing your seatbelt when traveling. We hope you never experience a disaster. But it’s good to be prepared for one, just in case. This is really important if you’re pregnant.

Unfortunately, some women experience abuse from a partner. Abuse, whether emotional or physical, is never okay. Abuse crosses all racial, ethnic and economic lines. It often gets worse during pregnancy. Recognize the signs of abuse and seek help.

    Things to avoid

    • Changing cat litter
    • Hot baths, hot tubs and saunas
    • Lead exposure from old pipes and faucets
    • Mercury from broken bulbs and thermometers
    • Pesticides and certain chemicals (check labels)
