How Genetic Counseling Can Help You

If you receive abnormal test results, or have evidence of a family genetic problem, a genetic counselor can be of great help to you. His or her role is to provide a complete and accurate view of the situation:
  • The nature of the birth defect being investigated
  • What its occurrence would mean in practical terms for all involved

In most cases, the risk is lower than the couple may have feared.

When a birth defect is diagnosed, genetic counselors provide emotional support and understanding during what can be a very difficult time. If there are decisions to be made—about the pregnancy, the care of the child, having more children, or the ability of the family to cope with ongoing problems—the parents can make more informed choices with the facts in hand.

The concept of genetic abnormalities can be frightening and confusing. A genetic counselor is trained to help translate the information clearly, and to be an emotional resource to help affected individuals deal with situations they face.
