March of Dimes WalkAmerica and Kmart Lead the Way for Healthy Babies

Retailer continues 17-year top team relationship as part of its new Leaders in Learning initiative.
WHITE PLAINS, APRIL 3, 2002—Kmart and the March of Dimes today announced the retailer will continue its number one national walk team support of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica through an educational paper bookmark campaign in Kmart stores nationwide and through its national Walk team efforts.
Kmart has been the number one national WalkAmerica team for 17 consecutive years, raising more than $33 million for the March of Dimes.
“Kmart is the store that understands what really matters in life,” said Kmart Chairman and CEO James B. Adamson. “That’s why Kmart associates have proudly supported the March of Dimes, and their mission to improve the health of babies, through participation in WalkAmerica.”
Every year, 450,000 babies are born prematurely and many struggle to survive, yet the reasons for preterm birth are still not known. Recognizing the urgency of the need to find the causes, the March of Dimes has made prematurity the focus of its WalkAmerica 2002, the annual national fund raising event that will take place the last weekend of April.
Kmart’s WalkAmerica campaign is part of the company’s Leaders in Learning initiative, which combines the importance of learning and the strength of diversity in communities where Kmart has a presence.
In support of the March of Dimes, Kmart will offer paper bookmarks for a $1 donation at its store registers. Under the Leaders in Learning program. Kmart is sharing educational messages on the back of each bookmark, in support of the March of Dimes mission.
In addition to the paper bookmark program, Kmart associates, friends and family members will participate in WalkAmerica in teams throughout the country in April. WalkAmerica sponsor forms are available at the Kmart service desk. In 2001, the Kmart team raised more than $3.3 million for the March of Dimes.
