March of Dimes and KMart Awards Scholarships to Outstanding Youth Volunteers Across America

WHITE PLAINS, NY. SEPTEMBER 27, 2000 - For the third consecutive year, ten outstanding high school seniors have been named 2000 March of Dimes/Kmart Youth Leadership Scholars. The ten honored students, whose volunteer efforts exemplify volunteer service and leadership, each receive a $2,500 scholarship.
The scholarship program is a joint effort by the March of Dimes and Kmart to identify and reward high school seniors whose volunteer service has contributed to improving the health of babies in their communities. The recipients were chosen from more than three hundred applicants, and they are:
Kimberly Co, Towaco, New Jersey: Kimberly is an active member of the March of Dimes Chain Reaction program in North Jersey. Chain Reaction, founded in 1988, involves student leaders from high schools in more than 70 communities nationwide. She has been awarded the Brungard Youth Award for outstanding March of Dimes youth volunteerism. She has also volunteered with Children Helping End Famine, the Earth Club and the Responsible Adolescents Can Help (REACH) substance abuse prevention program. She has been a member of the Key Club, the Academic Decathlon, and New Jersey science and math leagues. She is a graduate of Montville Township High School and plans to attend the College of New Jersey.
Stephanie Coffin, Lakeside, California: Stephanie has been on the San Diego Chain Reaction Youth Council for three years, as vice chair and WalkAmerica co-chair. She also volunteers on the local National Youth Crisis Hotline and is a member of the Future Educators of America. She is a graduate of West Hills High School and plans to attend Concordia University.
Robert Davis Jr., Ocala, Florida: Robert, who was born prematurely and saved through surfactant therapy, is president of the Marion County Chain Reaction Council and his family has earned the March of Dimes Chapter Volunteer Leader of the Year Award. He has been a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives. An International Baccalaureate student, he has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Mathematics Society, co-founder of the Discovery Science Club and president of the ASTRA Service Club. He is a graduate of Vanguard High School and plans to attend the University of Florida.
Phillip Dennison, Crawfordsville, Indiana: Phillip has been involved with the March of Dimes for thirteen years and has been awarded the We Value Youth award for his work. He also volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club, Walk for Warmth, raising funds for the elderly who cannot pay their heating costs and the Walk for Life, which helps fund the local crisis pregnancy center. He serves as a youth board representative with his local church and is a member of the National Honor Society. Phillip is a graduate of Crawfordsville High School and plans to attend the University of Indianapolis.
Katherine Geist, Panama City, Florida: Katherine has been a member of the Boys and Girls Club, the Latin Honors Society and her school’s research team, which led to work in finding a treatment for various muscular disorders, for which she is applying to patent and was nominated to compete in the International Science Fair. She is a graduate of Bay High School and plans to attend Agnes Scott College.
Angela Hsu, Montville, New Jersey: She has been a volunteer with the March of Dimes North Jersey Chapter for four years, is on the Chapter board and is co-president of the North Jersey Chain Reaction Youth Council. She also volunteers in the maternity ward of St. Clare’s Hospital, the Peer Mediation program, Peers As Listeners (PAL) and Responsible Adolescents Can Help (REACH) substance abuse prevention program. She is president of the National Students Union, a member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and vice president of the local Make-A-Wish foundation. Angela is a graduate of Montville Township High School and plans to attend New York University’s School of Education.
Sarah Yoon Ryung Hur, Fullerton, California: Sarah was founding secretary of her high school’s Technology Club, a member of the Orange Korean Church Education Staff and a Mexico Mission volunteer, running its food bank and translating Spanish into English for volunteering physicians. She is also a volunteer with the St. Jude Medical Center Youth Volunteer Program and the American Red Cross. An International Baccalaureate student and graduate of Sunny Hills High School, she plans to attend the University of Southern California.
Trang Pham, Houston, Texas: In addition to her school and extracurricular activities, Trang has contributed nearly 500 hours of volunteer work at the Memorial City Hospital as a board member, trainer, sibling class and computer class teacher. She has also volunteered at the Depelchin Center for Abused and battered Children and the Special Olympics. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Model United Nations and Science Olympiad.. She is a graduate of Langham Creek High School and plans to attend Stanford University.
Heather Ross, Lakeland, Florida: Heather organized a "Threads of Love" chapter, which makes and donates the Lakeland Regional Medical Center with gowns for premature babies. She is a graduate of Kathleen High School, where she was on the School Advisory Council, and plans to attend Florida Southern College.
Elizabeth Schamber, Mill Valley, California: She has served as coordinator of community service programs that work to improve children’s health by mentoring homeless teenage girls, providing daycare for teen parents and tutoring disadvantaged children. She plans to attend Wesleyan University.
"These young individuals demonstrate extraordinary commitment to the March of Dimes goal to help prevent birth defects and infant mortality," said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. "They have all truly gone above and beyond in their leadership of others, helping to give every child a healthy start in life."
