March of Dimes Named One of America's 100 Best Charities
White Plains, N.Y. December 4, 2002 - Edging out hundreds of other national health non-profits, the March of Dimes made Worth magazine’s list of "America’s 100 Best Charities," published in this month’s issue.
The March of Dimes is among 27 health non-profits listed in the article, chosen on a broad base of criteria, from flow-through of funds directly to programs to efficiency and expert testimony.
"On the health front, for example, we could have produced a top 100 list for health charities alone," writes the article’s author Reshma Memon Yaqub. "Each disease draws the helpful attention of multiple organizations, and we had to decide which groups were making strides either in curing a disease or in serving its victims, and which charities seemed to be along just for the ride."
The March of Dimes was cited for its impressive success in reducing neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly and for educating at-risk women about the importance of taking folic acid before and during pregnancy.
