May 2002

March of Dimes Global Programs is pleased to announce the creation of its Global Programs Newsletter. Its purpose is to create a voice for individuals and organizations interested in the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality worldwide.
The audience for the newsletter are those interested in improving perinatal health worldwide: physicians, nurses and other health care providers; researchers; health policy makers and donors in governmental agencies, nongovernmental agencies and international organizations; parent/patient support group members and the general public. The newsletter will be issued quarterly in 2002.
The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. For over 60 years, the foundation has initiated and sustained programs of community services, advocacy, research and education towards this end.
In 1998, the March of Dimes took a vital step toward its vision of a world in which all babies are born healthy by establishing the Office of Global Programs. Forging new relationships in other countries with governmental and nongovernmental organizations, health care professionals and the private sector is a cornerstone of March of Dimes international efforts.
Why distribute the Global Programs Newsletter? A major goal of the Global Programs Newsletter is to raise awareness among policymakers, health professionals and the public about the health and economic burdens that adverse outcomes of pregnancy pose to the populations of the world. The newsletter will also present effective, affordable and widely applicable responses to this burden by highlighting appropriate public health intervention and capacity-building efforts, as well as provide news about significant research and upcoming events such as symposia, conferences and impending report releases.
Until next time, The March of Dimes
