Working together to improve the health of moms and babies in our community
The March of Dimes Hawaii Chapter and our partner organizations are helping moms have healthier pregnancies and babies begin healthier lives. Below are some programs where our grants and awards are making a difference.
YMCA of Kauai - Hiilei Kauai Perinatal Program
The mission of the Hiilei Kauai Perinatal Program is to improve birth outcomes among first-time, high-risk mothers on Kauai by increasing their knowledge, understanding and awareness of health behaviors during pregnancy and through four months after they give birth. The program provides prenatal support and education services to increase the understanding of the importance of prenatal care, awareness of available community resources, recognition of the signs and symptoms of preterm labor, and knowledge of fetal development. Mothers and infants receive postpartum follow-up support for four months to increase understanding of newborn behavior, the benefits of breastfeeding and how to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center - Women's Health Support Services
This program focuses on providing risk reduction education, and information and referral services to pregnant women in the Leeward community who are, or are at risk of, using tobacco, alcohol or drugs. The program will screen and assess women identified as using substances and refer them for treatment services. Women’s Health Support Services will also conduct a Women’s Health Fair in Waianae to increase the community’s knowledge about substance abuse and the resources available in the community.
