When your baby is born too soon

When your baby is born prematurely (before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy), you and your partner can feel worried and overwhelmed, especially if he is in a newborn intensive care unit (NICU), even for a short time.

What's in store

Many premature babies need extra care in the NICU and at home. You might feel you have a lot to learn and understand about how to care for your baby and what to expect as the next year or so unfolds. What seem like simple questions from friends and family - "How old is your baby?" - can be confusing and even hard to answer.

Understanding what went wrong

We don't know all the reasons babies are born prematurely, though research is bringing us closer to finding the answers. You may be wondering why you went into labor early and whether there is anything you can do differently if you decide to get pregnant again. You may feel you have a lot to learn about premature birth, whether your baby was born just a couple of weeks early, or months too soon.

Comfort and support
