The purpose of the course is to enable caregivers to raise expectant parents' awareness of newborn screening. Although state-mandated newborn screening programs have existed for over four decades, many parents still are unaware of newborn screening. Caregivers have an essential role in helping parents become informed and prepared for their baby's newborn screening. The Region 4 Genetics Collaborative serves seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
The March of Dimes also offers a newborn screening pocket guide with an overview of newborn screening protocol, talking points for health care professionals and additional newborn screening resources.
