JOHN BAKER AND TOM BISE to CO-Chair WalkAmericaTwo Columbia Business Leaders Leading the March of Dimes Fight to Save Babies

(Columbia, SC February 27, 2007)—The March of Dimes South Carolina Chapter is pleased to announce that John Baker, Managing Partner of Baker & Baker Real Estate Developers, LLC (pictured above) and Tom Bise, Assistant Vice President of Marketing Communications, Advertising and Incentives for Colonial Supplemental Insurance (pictured below) will serve as co-chairs for WalkAmerica in Columbia.

WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes largest fundraiser, and funds raised support vital research into the causes and ways to prevent premature birth—the leading killer of newborns.

More than half a million babies are born too soon every year in the United States.  Many do not survive or face a lifetime of disability. In an average week in South Carolina, 168 babies are born prematurely each week.  By taking part in WalkAmerica, Columbia residents can help save babies and give hope to families.

“It’s important to us that all babies get a healthy start.  Please join us and be one of the millions of compassionate people who participate in WalkAmerica every year,” John Baker said.  “With your support, there’s hope,” Tom Bise continued.

John Baker has been active in the Columbia community for many years, and was recently awarded the March of Dimes Elaine Whitelaw Award for Volunteerism and Fundraising. Tom Bise has been involved in various education boards and councils in the community and has been an active March of Dimes volunteer and sponsor.

“The involvement of high profile local leaders is a key element in the continuing strength and appeal of WalkAmerica,” said David Campbell, President of the South Carolina Chapter Board. “We are fortunate to have someone so committed to saving babies’ lives in this community.”

In Columbia, WalkAmerica will take place on April 28 at the SC State Fairgrounds. For information on sponsorship opportunities or starting a team, visit marchofdimes.com/southcarolina or call 252-5200.

CPM Federal Credit Union is the statewide sponsor of WalkAmerica this year, and local sponsors include: SCE&G, Baker & Baker Real Estate Developers, Wachovia, Colonial Supplemental Insurance, Michelin, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Publix, WLTX, and Palmetto Parent Magazine.

Last year, the South Carolina March of Dimes invested more than $4.2 million in program services, including research grants and local community services. Through these grants, the March of Dimes is seeking ways to prevent birth defects and infant death, reduce South Carolina’s increasing premature birth rate, increase access to prenatal care and educate men and women about having healthy babies.

In 2007, National WalkAmerica Sponsors are CIGNA, Continental Airlines, Famous Footwear, Farmers, FedEx and Kmart—the March of Dimes number one corporate partner who has raised more than $55.5 million to save babies.  Additional national sponsorship is provided by

  • Discovery Health
  • Grain Foods Foundation
  • Mead Johnson Nutritionals
  • Outdoor Services.

The March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.  For more information, visit marchofdimes.com or nacersano.org for Spanish.
