| Women account for the majority of hospital employees. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 77% of hospital employees are women. There are over 25,000 nurses in South Carolina hospitals accounting for more than one-third of total hospital employees. Ninety-three percent of all nurses in the South Carolina are women. However, creating a mother-friendly work environments and particularly flexible work schedules for nurses is complex considering their direct patient care job demands and unconventional work hours.
The South Carolina Hospital Association is now partnering with The Motherhood Priority, a non-profit advocacy organization for working mothers, to produce Mother-Friendly Workplace Strategies and Solutions: A Workplace Policy Assessment Tool for Hospital Leaders www.marchofdimes.com/padpetition/workplacecriteria.pdf.
The project will assess hospital work environments and schedules for nurses who are or will become mothers. Solutions discovered and implemented for nurses can then be reproduced for other working mothers in the hospital setting.
