5th Annual African American Achievement Award Breakfast
13-Nov-07
The March of Dimes held its 5th Annual African American Achievement Award Breakfast on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the Columbia Marriott.  We were honored to present this year’s award to Ms. Jean Hopkins, Health Specialist and Mr. Clente Flemming, President/CEO of South Carolina Community Bank.

This event was important not only to the March of Dimes but to the African American community in that it created an increased awareness of health disparities in regards to premature birth.  In the African American community, 18.6% of babies are born premature making African American women 1.5 times more likely to experience premature labor.  Dr. Janice Whitty, guest speaker from MeHarry Medical College in Nashville Tennessee, addressed guests about the seriousness of prematurity, risk factors and what we can do to give our babies a healthy start.  Dr. Lisa Waddell, Deputy Commissioner for Health Services, highlighted the efforts of the March of Dimes and the ways in which the foundation advances its mission.
