The South Carolina Neural Tube Defect Prevention Initiative
Thanks to intensive tracking and education efforts, the rate of neural tube defects (serious birth defects of the brain and spinal cord) has been reduced by 60 percent, below the national average. NTDs can be prevented when women take a multivitamin containing folic acid before and during the early months of pregnancy.

This success is due in large part to a statewide partnership between the March of Dimes, Greenwood Genetic Center, SC Dept. of Disabilities and Special Needs, the Developmental Disabilities Council, DHEC and the Dept. of Health and Human Services. The South Carolina March of Dimes has invested more than $1.7 million dollars in the partnership since 1998. Called South Carolina’s success story of the decade, this initiative has received national attention and is considered a model prevention program.

If you are interested in free folic acid materials such as brochures (English or Spanish) or fact sheets , please e-mail us or call us at (803) 252-5200, or contact the Greenwood Genetic Center at (800) 6-SOMEDAY.

Donating is easy online, by phone or mail / fax.
