| The South Dakota Chapter is pleased to announce the funding of 2 grants for 2008, to support programs promoting preconception health and the health of pregnant women and their babies. The funded programs are:
- Volunteers of America, Dakotas serves 21 counties in southeastern South Dakota. Their grant titled “Recovery Resources” will be used to provide prevention and education materials to these counties, specifically targeting women of childbearing age with a focus on the effects of drugs and alcohol on pregnancy. The project will use educational outreach through the Volunteers of America Southeastern Prevention Resource Center to offer comprehensive videos and instructional materials to educate women on the effects of alcohol, drugs and tobacco during pregnancy. An additional focus of the grant will be to reach adolescent and adult women through the Volunteers of America New Start Program, which serves pregnant and parenting mothers who are at high risk.
- The Center for Disabilities has been serving individuals in South Dakota for over 30 years. Their grant, “Resource Guide on Alcohol and Drug Use During Pregnancy” is an expansion of their 2007 grant which created a resource guide to increase health education and information/referral services available to pregnant women who use alcohol and other drugs. With their 2008 grant, the project will expand these efforts by disseminating the resource guide to new geographical areas. These areas include Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls, in addition to the 2007 site in Aberdeen. The project collaborates with the WIC offices in each of these communities to make this possible.
