The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies.
The Texas Chapter Grants Program is designed to enable communities and organizations to develop projects that further the March of Dimes mission and support national and state objectives. Organizations are encouraged to develop proposals that demonstrate their capacity, competence and experience in addressing March of Dimes priorities through well-developed project goals and objectives.
In 2008, we seek to improve birth outcomes, increase prenatal care utilization and improve the quality of prenatal education for pregnant women in Texas. Through this Request for Applications, we will select prenatal care provider groups interested in moving from a traditional prenatal care model to a group prenatal care model using CenteringPregnancy®. In 2006 and 2007, March of Dimes funded the following CenteringPregnancy® projects:

CenteringPregnancy® is a group prenatal care model developed by Sharon Schindler Rising, MSN, CNM, FACNM whereby care is taken out of examination rooms and placed within a large conference room. In that space, women receive their basic prenatal assessment, share concerns informally with other women, and discuss together content related to childbearing and parenting. These sessions are led by a skilled group leader who also coordinates the assessment component. Ideally this leader is a nurse-midwife or nurse practitioner. All applications must address the following funding priority:
Implementing the CenteringPregnancy® model of group prenatal care for primarily low-income pregnant women residing in Texas.
Organizations that need funding for projects that address the March of Dimes mission but do not match this priority area are encouraged to contact Karen Littlejohn at 972.669.3463 Ext. 107 or klittlejohn@marchofdimes.com for information about other possible funding opportunities.
