Newborn Screening Laboratory Contracting
|
Representative Myra Crownover sponsored House Bill 1671 which authorizes Department of State Health Services to enter into contracts with other states to ensure continuity of newborn screening services in the event that a disaster affects the state laboratory.
Texans know firsthand how a devastating disaster can interrupt critical care services. We cannot afford to allow unforeseen emergencies to interfere with the effective newborn screening system Texas has developed. By allowing the Department of State Health Services to work with other states, we will ensure that no child is lost in the process and this vital testing for newborns won’t be interrupted.
Screening newborns immediately after birth is critical to identifying and ultimately treating certain genetic disorders in infants. By implementing emergency reciprocity agreements with other states, we can continue our goal of assuring the best outcome for every child born in Texas.
And while HB 1671 helps ensure our newborns don’t lose any precious time before getting screened, the bill also allows Texas to provide laboratory services to other states faced with an emergency or disaster. These mutual agreements are critical to providing consistent care for infants which will ultimately result in healthier, longer lives for ALL children. |
