March of Dimes Legislative Priorities
|
The March of Dimes State Public Affairs Committee, led by Chairwoman Dr. Charleta Guillory of Houston and Vice-Chair Tom Watkins of Austin, had already begun to lay the foundation for the committees work throughout the 2008 interim. The Committee had outlined an agenda involving over seven pieces of major legislation, which included Smoke-Free Texas, CHIP buy-in, and several other clean-up bills for Department of State Health Services. While we did not see passage of the CHIP buy-in or Smoke-Free Texas legislation, there were several other major agenda items that we succeeded in passing.
The March of Dimes Public Affairs agenda focuses on public policies and programs that relate to the Foundation’s mission – improving the health of infants and children by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality – and on issues that pertain to tax-exempt organizations. During the 81st Texas Legislative Session, the Texas Chapter successfully secured four legislative wins. |
