| The March of Dimes Texas Chapter has been selected as an AmeriCorps VISTA project site for 2005/2006. We are currently recruiting 6 VISTA volunteers to work in Lubbock, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and McAllen.
The March of Dimes VISTA project will focus primarily on outreach and education for low-income Hispanic and African-American women related to prematurity. Hispanic and African American women are less likely to receive early and consistent prenatal care and are at greater risk than the general population of giving birth to premature and/or low birthweight babies. The VISTA project will develop community partnerships with churches, schools, hospitals, clinics, community-based organizations and other entities in order to educate women about the warning signs of preterm labor. The VISTA project will identify the existing social services, medical and community resources (public and private) that promote and support healthy pregnancies and babies.
