16-Apr-03 |
WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes biggest and best-known fund raising event, now in its 33rd year. It takes place in 1,200 communities, and has more than 500,000 walkers nationwide. Here in Upstate New York thousands of participants are expected, who are walking to raise money to save babies.
In Upstate New York the first steps to save local babies will be taken on April 26 & 27 and May 3 & 4, 2003 at 29 different sites.
Through WalkAmerica, residents of Upstate New York are helping the March of Dimes find out why some babies are born too soon. Each year, more than 460,000 babies in the U. S. are born prematurely, nearly half of them for unknown reasons. The money raised through WalkAmerica supports research and programs to save babies from premature birth, birth defects, and other threats to their health. Through your participation in WalkAmerica babies can be saved right here in Upstate New York.
The 2003 national sponsors for WalkAmerica are CIGNA, Kmart, Famous Footwear, Butler GUM, Allied/North American and Discovery Health, while the local event enjoys the support of Excellus.
“WalkAmerica dollars have supported our research and targeted community programs across the country and right here in Upstate New York, for more than 33 years,” said Dennis Schrader, State Director of Communications for the Upstate New York Chapter of the March of Dimes. “It’s great to know we’ll all play a part in unlocking the mysteries behind prematurity.”
