| Over the past five years, Georgetown Primary has worked hard to raise money for the March of Dimes. For the majority of those years, Georgetown Primary has been the number one school team for the Virginia Beach/Norfolk March for Babies. As each year comes and goes their commitment to the March of Dimes and saving babies grows stronger. Over the past few years, their goal has increased. Through fundraising activities this year including, student and staff campaigns, t-shirt sales, silent auctions, skating parties, bake sales, online donations and local partnerships, the school exceeded its own goal.
Georgetown Primary’s partnership with the March of Dimes all began with a Georgetown Primary staff member who made it her mission after her first born was brought into this world at 26 weeks or 3 ˝ months early. On August 18, 2002, Kameron Brown gave birth to a baby girl, Kinsley Monroe Brown. Kinsley was an inspiration too all who knew her during her short time on earth.
In a tragic irony, just before Kinsley died in March of 2003, due to complications from being born prematurely, a new drug became available to help prevent preterm labor. That sad irony turned sweet, however, as Mrs. Brown was able to use the medication with two subsequent pregnancies, enabling her to have two healthy babies. Marley was born one month early and Lyndey was full term.
Because of Kinsley’s little life, many more babies have been saved. Mrs. Brown began working with the March of Dimes to give back. Because of her leadership, Georgetown has raised over $27,000.00 over the past five years for the March of Dimes.
On behalf of the faculty and staff at Georgetown Primary a beautiful Cherry Kwanzan tree was dedicated in memory of Kinsley and in honor of Mrs. Brown’s commitment to Georgetown Primary and the March of Dimes. The tree was purchased with staff donations because of her constant commitment to the March of Dimes.
The tree now adorns the Kindergarten playground and is a memorial to the life of Kinsley for all to see. During the presentation of the tree, Mr. and Mrs. Brown placed a plaque near the tree. The plaque reads: “This tree is planted In Memory of Kinsley Monroe Brown August 18, 2002 - March 3, 2003 and in Honor of Darin and Kameron Brown April 24th, 2009.”
