March of Dimes working to develop electronic family health history tool for prenatal providers
25-Jul-09
The Office of the Medical Director is collaborating with several organizations to develop an electronic family health history tool for use during a woman’s prenatal visit with her health care provider.  Please see the recent press release to read more about the project’s goals and partners.

Family health history- the health information about a person and their close relatives- is one of the most important risk factors for health problems like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.  In addition, some obstetrical conditions, such as preterm birth, are now known to recur in certain women and to run in certain families.  Family health history information can also help health care providers screen and assess risks for numerous single-gene conditions, some of which are amenable to testing and, more importantly, to preventive measures.
