Councilman Charles Whitehurst, Sr., graduate of Norfolk State University holds a graduate degree in bank marketing from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His professional titles have included chairman of the board and president of various banks, Dean of School of Business and Church Administration at Virginia Bible College and Director of Commonwealth Cash Reserve Fund. In 1995, he was one of 26 delegates to the “White House Conference on Small Businesses”.
Whitehurst served two terms as Portsmouth City Treasurer. In 2002, when he ran for his second term as city councilman, Whitehurst set and still holds the records for the most votes received by a Portsmouth candidate. Over the past 40 years, he has received hundreds of awards and recognitions for outstanding leadership, merit and service.
Besides numerous financial articles, Whitehurst has written several books including a book of poetry. In 1994, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Virginia Bible University.
But if you ask him about himself, Whitehurst will tell you two facts.
He is a United States Marine Major retired and a Vietnam veteran, and he is Chairman of Portsmouth WalkAmerica. Whitehurst wears his March of Dimes wrist band year around as a reminder of his mission. And when asked about the band, he reels off facts about prematurity and his concern for families and the impact on communities.
Under is 5-year leadership, Portsmouth WalkAmerica has grown from about 100 participants and a $20,000 campaign to the 2006 campaign of more than 1,200 volunteers represented by 30 veteran teams and 21 new teams which raised almost $95,000. Whitehurst continuously brings the March of Dimes mission before audiences and shares the message with civic groups and with community members he stops on the streets
As current chairman of the Greater Hampton Roads division, Whitehurst goal is to work for regional and state improvements in infant mortality.
