Row 500 for Preemies
On July 1, 2008 Carlene Anders and Gene Dowers will begin a 25 day, 500 mile rowing trip starting at the Canadian Border north of Kettle Falls, WA ending at Wawawaii Landing, home of the WSU Cougar crew boathouse.  They will follow the Columbia River and end on the Snake River.  It will be the 20th anniversary of a similar rowing trip.  This year Carlene and Gene will be fundraising for the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and March of Dimes.

Why March of Dimes?
Five years ago Carlene and Gene’s son, Danny, was born at 24 weeks and 4 days, weighing just 1lb., 10oz.  Danny was in the NICU at the UWMC for 115 days.  Many of the procedures and treatments that kept him alive were the result of the kinds of research funded by March of Dimes.  The Dowers family has been blessed with a great little boy who has very few complications as a result of his extreme prematurity.  Carlene and Gene want to give something back to support March of Dimes and UWMC to help future advances in the prevention of premature births and the care of premature infants.

Danny’s Story
Danny was born on December 24, 2002 at 24 weeks and four days, weighing 1lb., 10oz.  Danny spent 115 days in the UWMC NICU.  During his stay he endured 86 chest x-rays, collapsed lungs, a chest tube, eight blood transfusions, PDA heart surgery, hernia strangulation, eight ROP eye exams and was put on a ventilator for seven weeks.  Danny met 53 different nurses and 23 different doctors during his stay.  Through all of this the Dowers family knows that Danny is a true blessing.
