| The Washington State Chapter of the March of Dimes, with leadership from volunteers in the Inland Northwest Division, nursing students at Seattle Pacific University and a University of Washington Masters in Public Health student, has developed a program designed to educate teenagers about birth defects and premature birth. The presentation discusses some of the known causes of these significant problems and ways to promote a healthy pregnancy and to reduce the risks of having a premature child or a child with birth defects. The presentation uses PowerPoint and is intended to last approximately one hour. The slides are complete with detailed speaker's notes, including suggested questions and interaction points.
It will also address the following Health and Fitness Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs):
- 1.4 Understand the relationship of nutrition and food nutrients to physical performance and body composition
- 2.1 Recognize patterns of growth and development
- 2.2 Understand the concept of control and prevention of disease
- 2.3 Acquire skills to live safely and reduce health risks
- 3.1 Understand how environmental factors affect one’s health
- 3.3 Use social skills to promote health and safety in a variety of situations
March of Dimes fact sheets (http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332.asp) and brochures (http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/2222.asp) complement the presentation well.
Most educators with some health background should be able to use this presentation as is.
