Meet our Ambassador Family: Asliyah's Army
Adrianna, Colt, Jet & Aaliyah
Aaliyah Allen was born 16 weeks early weighing only 1 lb 4 oz. Her eyes were still fused shut and her skin was translucent. Aaliyah spent the first 4 months of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where she needed help breathing and underwent brain surgeries for brain bleeds and hydrocephalus (water on the brain).
Aaliyah was eventually able to go home, but her life has been an on-going cycle of therapies, repeat surgeries to repair the shunt in her head, hospitalizations because of her weakened immune system, and constant struggles. Aaliyah was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a severe developmental delay, and a list of other things. At 8-years-old, she has yet to walk, talk or do many of the things we take for granted.
Even with all of the hurdles and moments taken away, her loved ones have things to be grateful for. Aaliyah isn't blind because doctors caught and preformed surgery to fix the eye problems brought on by prematurity. She can breathe without assistance, due to the steroid shots that she received prior to birth.
Premature birth touches half a million babies every year. We need your help to make sure all babies are born healthy and full-term. The March of Dimes researches the problems that cause premature birth and finds solutions so that one day, no family will have to experience having a baby in the NICU.
Join us, this Friday September 21st at Night Moves 2012 to run for Aaliyah and every baby born too soon.
