    2012 Ambassadors: The Connelly Family

We thought we’d planned for everything in our pregnancy, from the anticipated due date to the best chances in gender selection, but when the doctor humored us with an ultrasound at only one week pregnant, we had not planned for twins! And girls!

25 weeks later we found ourselves attempting to plan again in celebrating with friends and family at a co-ed baby shower when yet again “the girls” had other plans! Emilia’s “Baby A” placenta ruptured and the babies were born by emergency c-section the very next day. Emilia was born first at 10:03 a.m., weighing 2 lbs and Olivia right behind her at 10:05 a.m., weighing 1 lb 14 oz, they were 26 weeks and 1 day. Emilia, the troublemaker, had to be resuscitated upon delivery causing a grade 4 bleed on the right side of her brain. Olivia, the bulldozer, had no issues that weren’t anticipated.

In the weeks to follow, the girls struggled side by side to breathe independently. Early on Olivia developed necrotizing enterocolitis “NEC,” a mystery-type gastrointestinal disease that affects mostly premature infants and requires surgical intervention. After three surgeries and six  weeks of nutrition by IV, Olivia was eligible to eat but not quite able…keeping food down and gaining weight were challenges that left us begging the hospital to let her come home, which she did only one week after Emilia. Emilia’s brain bleed left her battling hydrocephalus, which was alleviated by shunt placement just one week prior to her homecoming. 3 long months in the hospital were well worth it and both girls were home!

After months of 3 a.m. feedings for two  hungry babies with at least one screaming heart monitor, everyone is healthy and doing great! The girls have thankfully never had to make a trip to the emergency room or have a hospital stay. Emilia was diagnosed with cerebral palsy earlier this year, but so far is only minimally limited on her left side, which she receives physical and occupational therapy for. Olivia graduated from physical and occupational therapy shortly after turning one! Both girls love to play with their seven year-old “Bubba”, Chason, dancing, looking at books and are learning their body parts.
